Custom coded activation link

Since the activation link in my theme doesn’t send and it doesn’t look like it will be fixed in the near future what can I add to the site to handle activation emails? Users are even having trouble logging in after I go in and activate their accounts for them. Perhaps disabling account activation all together would be best
