Setting up homepage

Good morning! I apologize for the very basic question. I went through all 215 subjects to see if the question was already asked and was unable to find it. I’m having issues setting up the homepage and displaying content. What’s generally a good place to start or which items to use in the VC editor? I’m not superb with wordpress but I know how to get around and generally get what I need done. I just can’t seem to figure out what is being used on the demo site. Also, for the menu’s such as the team wars link and how it drops down with organized links and images I don’t see how to do that as well unless it involves some actual hardcoding. A general direction would be greatly appreciated.
