html tags showing in funding emails

I still have the default email templates in place under funding settings > email settings, but when the email is recieved by the funder and the project creator it is showing the html <br> tags instead of creating breaks. I can see in the funding_custom_post_types.php file where the email is triggerd and adding (and then removing) the wp_mail_content_type filter, but it just isn’t applying. Is there a setting I am missing or something?
